Personality:

❝In the world of school idols, μ's are like gods! Such a mistake is sacrilege! They're record-breaking geniuses, masters of their craft! They're everything, true legends! Thinking you could be like them is ridiculous!

When Dia makes her first appearance, she seems like the last girl on Earth who would want to become an idol. Even putting aside her opposition to Chika's idol club Dia presents herself as what can only be called a titanic stick in the mud. She's strict and bossy and overly nitpicky in the worst kind of way. But it's only to be expected of her. After all, Dia is not only the student council president but she's also the eldest daughter of the esteemed Kurosawa family and she's most certainly a product of her upbringing. Or so she'd like you to think, anyway.

For the most part, Dia comes across as just what you'd expect of a girl from such an old, traditional family. She keeps her hair long, speaks formally (maybe even overly so) and generally conducts herself with all the prim and prissiness you'd expect of a girl from her background. She's incredibly assertive and doesn't tolerate fools -- she might speak with the formality of a high-class girl but if you've done something to earn her scorn then she'll let you know loudly and at length. Even her little sister isn't safe from this and both of them admit that while Dia adores Ruby, she's just as strict with her sister as she is with anybody else. This air of frankly terrifying severity is what lead her to become the student council president in the first place. It wasn't a role Dia decided on herself but was something she volunteered to do after hearing people insist that she was the best fit. So she took up the mantle. Despite it not being something she was particularly enthusiastic about to start with, Dia nonetheless does her best to be the best student council president she can be. Like with everything else she does, Dia takes this role incredibly seriously -- probably a little more seriously than it needs to be, honestly.

It doesn't help that Dia's standards are high enough to orbit the International Space Station. This is something imbued on her through years of high-class tutoring and living but it's also something that comes incredibly naturally to her fussy self. While this might be fine if it was just herself she held to these exacting standards but she expects everyone else to adhere to them as well. She's a perfectionist of the highest order and can't stand when things aren't done just right. She's a stickler for the not just the small details but the microscopic ones. Chika's bumbling efforts to start her school idol club are enough to kickstart a minute-long rant about her improper procedure and for Dia to dramatically declare that she will never allow a school idol club to form at Uranohoshi.

Dia's apparent distaste of school idols certainly seems a little overblown, though. Despite her younger sister loving idols with all her heart, she literally can't stand the sight of them. Chika's idol club wasn't the first one she rejected and it likely wouldn't have been the last. She can only keep up this cold front for so long though. In fact, all it takes is her hearing someone mispronounce the name of her favourite idol group and the gloves are off faster than you'd believe. Because Dia doesn't just like school idols. She doesn't just love school idols. Dia worships school idols with every bone in her body. She's a font of knowledge of every kind of school idol activity and can rattle off obscure trivia at the drop of a hat. The majority of her fervor is directed towards the now-disbanded μ's. And as Chika is unfortunate enough to find out, you do not want to disrespect μ's within earshot of Dia or god help you.

Because the truth is that under the veneer of cool severity beats the heart of a total dork. She does her very best to keep up this act, to maintain the illusion of a cool and dignified beauty, but Dia is not dignified and she is not cool in any sense of the word. She's able to make herself seem relatively level-headed when she's doing her best to hold back but once someone gives her the slightest excuse to do so, she ramps up to 200% and carries on from there.

She's a passionate and energetic girl who can't even comprehend the idea of not giving something her all. She's this way about everything from cleaning the pool at school to volunteering at a snack bar on the beach. While her full-throttle passion is one of her strong points it's something of a double edged sword as well. Dia is explosive and fiery and quite frankly it doesn't take much to get her going. She has a hair-trigger that gets set off at the most ridiculous of things. She's a fussy, picky kind of girl at the best of times but once she gets really ramped up the tiniest of nitpicks will send her into minute-long rants that seem to have little connective tissue. To be frank, she's exhausting to deal with even when she's on your side. Dia genuinely expects people to be able to go along with her utterly insane pace and can't get her head around the fact that for the most part they can't.

While she's not exactly embarrassed by this side of herself, Dia knows it's not really proper for a girl of her upbringing. She might carry her heart on her sleeve, but she'll get flustered and backtrack as hard as she can when her cool and composed attitude slips. Even when she's exposed as a top-tier μ's fangirl, she insists that her exacting knowledge is just "basic information". She's not a particularly good liar but she's stubborn enough to try and keep the fib going.

And Dia is stubborn as an ox. She won't back down from anything which makes her even more exhausting if you're unfortunate enough to be butting heads with her. Her continued disdain for Aqours stems from this as she's too stubborn to openly admit that maybe she was wrong so be so dismissive of them. But even as she keeps up this chilly attitude, Dia does what she can to help them succeed. She's incredibly harsh and often coaches her advice in the form of tirades on the topic of their inadequacy but it's good advice. She has a fair bit of insight into the way being a school idol works and how best to succeed at it. Which means it's not much of a surprise when Dia finally admits she's not just a school idol fan -- she's a former school idol who ended up crashing and burning before she could really shine.

The incident that lead to Dia's failure as a school idol is incredibly painful for her. It sullied the idea of the school idols she loves so much and it also drove a huge wedge between her and her two best friends. She smarts so badly from the failure that she throws up a cold and distant front even to her little sister. When Mari and Kanan finally return to the school, Dia still can't bring herself to reach out to them properly and simply stews in what can only be called bitterness about the whole incident rather than doing anything proactively to try and resolve it.

Unfortunately for Dia, the entire dramabomb is informed hugely by worst flaws as a person. While her infectious enthusiasm kept them going in the right direction for a time, her infectious zeal causes Mari to start turning down important future opportunities in favour of continuing her school idol career with Dia and Kanan. It comes to a head when Mari tries to go on stage despite sporting an ankle injury and Dia and Kanan decide then and there to disband the group for, what they believe, is Mari's own good. It's an incredibly dramatic choice but Dia is, unfortunately, an incredibly dramatic girl. She might be smart and well-educated but she's still a teenager who only has so much experience with big interpersonal conflict. She can struggle with sincerity where it really counts especially with the people she cares about most. It seems to never occur to her to just sit down and have a straightforward talk with Mari rather than going the dramatic and overblown route of splitting up the group. It seems to be the only option she considers, as a way of slapping Mari in the face to bring her back to reality. But all it really does is cause a rift in the three's friendship that almost splits them apart permanently and drives them away from the thing they truly love doing: being school idols.

Dia's reaction to the hurt is to close herself off from the world of school idols as much as she can. She's still as much of a fangirl as ever in her heart but she rejects the notion of them on the surface. Even as she vocally disapproves of Chika's school idol club she still makes a point of passing down the name "Aqours" to their group and doing her best to give them help and advice where she can. She softens gradually as the group continues to work and seeing them smarting from their first real failure encourages Dia to open up to them. Because no matter how hard she tries to be, Dia isn't cold and detached. She's bright and fiery especially when it comes to the things she loves. And she loves school idols more than anything even when she does her best to hide it. It takes a great deal of cajoling to get Dia to finally let her guard down once and for all and join Aqours but when she does, the difference in her attitude is staggering. Where she'd been harsh and antagonistic before, she's suddenly bouncy and energetic, loud and brash and dotes on Ruby with the sickening sweetness only a fond older sister can do. It's not a total overnight transformation, of course -- Dia tries to act the part of the cool and collected student council president when she thinks it's called for and being a school idol doesn't change the way she's expected to conduct herself as a daughter of the Kurosawas.

With Aqours, though, Dia is utterly and ridiculously herself. It may have taken a lot to get her to open up and really be sincere, but the end result was beautifully and wonderfully worth it. Now that she has something to be unabashedly passionate about and people who won't judge or think badly of her energy, Dia pours absolutely everything she has into Aqours. Her experience and knowledge of school idols proves valuable and her full-throttle energy is a good motivator to get the group going. She's still as strict and prissy as ever but now she's able to use that to the group's advantage and whip them into shape when they need it best. She couldn't be more different from the stiff, linefaced student council president she starts off as -- she is, as Mari puts it, finally shining.
